The Greatest Gift
What is the most memorable gift you’ve ever given? What is the most memorable gift you’ve ever received? One year, when I was a student, my aunt gave me a round trip airplane ticket, good for anywhere in the continental US. Part of the joy of that gift was imagining where all it might take me. More recently, I found what I’d been searching a decade to find: a player piano for my Daddy. It took some figuring to get it to Texas, but he plays it all the time. In fact, if you sleep too late, a jaunty tune will snap you out of dreamland.
This time of year, many of us are thinking about the gifts that we will give and receive. What does this have to do with Christmas? What does it have to do with Jesus? I doubt that he would recognize what we have done with our commemorations of his birthday. If you are feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of a commercial Christmas, stop and remember what Jesus gave to us. His ultimate gift continues to be the gift of himself, the gift of life and time and presence. How might his example of gift giving be incorporated into our own celebrations?
This year, consider making a present of presence, and make sure you invite Jesus into your celebrations of his birth.
