Perfect Love Casts Out Fear.
No Weapons Here.
Our church has long standing commitment to peace and active non-violence. We are members of the Baptist Peace Fellowship, and raised a peace pole on our grounds some years back. Our members work to promote peace through our prayers, speech, involvements, and actions.
This year, the Wisconsin legislature passed a bill that allows people to carry concealed weapons. This type of law exists in other states, but many of them make provisions exempting places of worship. This is not the case in our state. After some discussion, the church leadership decided to post signs making it clear that weapons are prohibited on our property. This is in keeping with our established policies.
This is not the conclusion that all churches reached. A sister congregation recently responded to unwelcome outbursts in their services by enlisting armed security guards. The ministry council felt strongly that this was not the direction we wanted to take at Underwood.
If you are interested in learning more about how churches are responding to this new law, I encourage you to read what the Wisconsin Council of Churches have to say by going to http://www.wichurches.org/resources/concealed-carry-information-for-congregations/ .
